Yingzhou Hu

Artistic Consultant

Dr. Yingzhou Hu is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Piano Studies at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA, where he maintains an active career as a pianist, scholar, educator, and music leader. He performs, lectures, and adjudicates widely across the United States, Asia, Africa, and Europe, and is internationally recognized for his contributions to piano pedagogy, African-American piano literature, and jazz–classical performance practices.

Dr. Hu holds degrees from Capital University (B.M.), the Manhattan School of Music (M.M.), and The Ohio State University (D.M.A.), where he studied with Tianshu Wang, Jeffrey Cohen, Alexandre Moutouzkine, and Carolina Hong. 

The United States has recognized Dr. Hu's exceptional talent and international impact by granting him permanent residency under the "Extraordinary Ability in Arts" category. His academic and artistic achievements include The Ohio State University with the Graduate Achievement Award, laureate of the Golden Classical International Music, American Protégé International Piano Competitions, and the Karen Jean Foster Keyboard Competition. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Wind Symphony of Ohio State University, Ohio Dominican University, The Ohio State University, Ohio Blind School, Clark Atlanta University, and the Atlanta University Center. His solo piano performances at Carnegie Hall took place in March 2017 and November 2021. From 2019-2022, He was appointed by Ohio Governor DeWine as resident artist at the Governor's residence. 

Dr. Hu’s dedication to teaching excellence is affirmed by the 2022 Steinway & Sons Top Teacher Award and the 2024 GMTA Annual Award, and the 2024 Clark Atlanta University Faculty Professional Development Award. His commitment to pedagogy is further reflected in his faculty appointments as visiting piano faculty at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and collaborative piano faculty at Ohio Dominican University. His has been invited to give lectures and masterclasses at Universities and Colleges, MTNA chapters, states and national conferences-including the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, Music Teachers National Association, International Piano Professionals Association, Steinway & Sons galleries, and internationally in China. His topics include African-American Women Composers, Entrepreneurship among HBCU Students, Career Development of Young Pianists, and Classical and Jazz Exploring of Nikolai Kapustin.

Dr. Hu demonstrates his commitment to fostering musical excellence. His service to the community included being an Organist at Riverside United Methodist Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus, OH, and Union Lutheran Church, Leesville, SC. 

 

Dr. Hu's dedication to music leadership in the music teaching community, Dr. Hu  has held positions as the VP of the Georgia Music Teachers Association, president of the Atlanta Music Teachers Association, chairing in strings and instrumental concerto audition and composition competition of GMTA/MTNA, and the Assistant Director of the Franz Liszt International Piano Festival & Competition, His community engagement has included service as an organist at Riverside United Methodist Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus, OH, and Union Lutheran Church in Leesville, SC.

He has adjudicated numerous national and international competitions, including the Shanghai International Youth Piano Competition, Young Ludwig International Music Competition, Piano Wave on Gulangyu Island International Youth Piano Competition, Ohio Federation of Music Competition, Southeast Young Artist Piano Competition, the RIPC Atlanta Piano Competition, and multiple MTNA states/local competitions. His membership in professional organizations such as OFMC, OMTA, GMTA, and the American Liszt Society.
